The great thing about picnics is that they can be very simple or super fancy, and both can still be amazing experiences. There is often nothing better than an impromptu picnic – grabbing a bottle of wine, a blanket and getting some fish and chips by the beach is always fun. On the other end of the scale a big fancy picnic with all the trimmings is the perfect way to celebrate an important occasion.
However you like to picnic, there are a few essential items that are guaranteed to make your experience more enjoyable, so read on while we run you through our complete guide to hosting the perfect picnic.
How to host the perfect picnic #1 Food
Picnics are the ultimate snacking experience. You will want food that is not only delicious, but also easy to eat so you don’t need to pack loads of cutlery. Long gone are the days of Jatz crackers and a slice of cheddar or soggy sandwiches and a bag of chips. Picnics have evolved to be full blown culinary experiences where the only limits are your imagination.
Some of the best picnics can be potluck where everyone brings a plate and everyone gets to tuck in and try something new. And I think that everyone can agree that serving platters are the best, and perfect for serving up snacky food. If you are looking for serving platter inspiration then we highly recommend checking out…….for inspo or reading our easy summer entertaining ideas.
If you have a big crowd coming along to your picnic then an extra large serving board is a must. Our Large Cheese Board is 76cm x 20cm x 3cm giving plenty of room for your cheese, crackers and other delicious nibbles.
Cheese is pretty much a given at any picnic (who doesn’t love cheese!!), so a smart set of cheese knives is a picnic must have. If you already have a set of our cheese knives you will know that they come packaged in a smart box, which is great for storing them in and taking them to picnics – they also come with a handy guide telling you which knife to use for which type of cheese (your welcome). And if you really want to be swish you could always add our copper cheese markers so your guests know what they are nibbling on.
Ps – if you are thinking about going for a cheese and wine pairing theme, then make sure to check out our easy cheese and wine pairing here.
How to host the perfect picnic #2: Drink
What to drink obviously comes down to personal preference, but for sheer ease nothing beats a good bottle of wine! We kind of feel that the two were made to go together! Not so say that you couldn’t wip up a quick cocktail if you wanted, that would be pretty awesome, and if you need a shaker this one is pretty cool.
We will leave it up to you what you want to drink….but we can recommend a few drinking items that will make your picnic experience just that little bit more perfect.
Stemless Copper Glasses
Ok, so let’s talk about copper glasses….. These are PERFECT for picnics – and here are the reasons why;
- They look awesome – guaranteed you will be asked where you got them!
- They keep your drink cool – perfect for warmer days
- Won’t smash – so no nasty sharp bits to clean up, and great if you have kids around.
- Sturdey – our copper glasses, mugs and champagne flutes are all stemless which makes them harder to knock over meaning you are less likely to lose a drop of the good stuff.
- You can disguise what’s in them! Just the thing if you fancy a sneaky wine at lunch time!
Have we convinced you yet? So versatile and you don’t need to compromise on style when you need something practical! These are going to be coming with us everywhere this Spring/Summer. They are perfect to chuck in a bag for a last minute sundowner, and look super glam as part of a fancy picnic set up.
Ice bucket or wine cooler
If you are looking to move on from the plastic flexi-tub filled with ice….then we highly recommend getting a proper ice bucket. Not only do they look smart AF, they also create a centerpiece for your picnic, and are also pretty handy at keeping your drinks cool. We would always advise getting one that’s big enough for more than one bottle – our leather and brass champagne bucket does this job nicely. However if you are in the market for something more slimline our single bottle wine cooler fits the bill.

So what essential features make the best picnic rugs?
- Size – you will want to make sure it has room for your besties
- Comfort – picnics are all about relaxing in style so a little bit of padding between yourself and the ground will make the whole experience a whole lot better.

- Easy to clean – essential if your picnic involves kids, ideally something that you can just pop in the washing machine when you are done.
- Portability – with so many other things to carry a mat that folds up neatly will make your picnic experience so much easier.
